Declaration of the Rights of Boys and Girls Summary

S E N I O R I N F A N T S

by Élisabeth Brami, ill by Estelle Billon-Spagnol

Highlights

A funny, quirkily illustrated and heartwarming list of the rights of boys and girls, presented as a flipbook to be read from either end. Sure to appeal to young boys and girls, especially those who take a different view of the world.

• Funny and entertaining for young readers • Beautiful, playful full-colour illustration throughout • Addresses very current topic of gender equality in a fun, child-friendly way • Endorsed by Amnesty International • Flipbook that can be read from both sides – one for girls and one for boys – so suitable for either or both genders

Girls, just like boys, have the right to be scruffy, untidy, hyper, to do any job they like, not to be princesses, to love whoever they like. Boys have as much right as girls to cry, to play with dolls, to wear pink, to like reading, not to be superheroes, to fall in love with anyone they like.

Author Biography Élisabeth Brami was born in Warsaw. After graduating from her studies in humanities and literature, she became a psychologist. Married and mother of three children, she became a children’s author in 1990 and has not stopped writing since.

Reviews ‘Possibly the best kids book ever … two books in one and it’s FANTASTIC’ – Roisín Ingle, journalist ‘Fiction for the six-plus crew is often highly gendered, so [this book] is incredibly welcome as a title that draws attention to gender stereotyping… The vibrant and funny illustrations take the potentially preachy edge off this important book for the under-10s.’ – The Irish Times ‘An important book that deserves a special place in every classroom across the globe as a reminder of our equal rights, and to encourage us not to be restricted by expectation or particular stereotypes, but to do what we enjoy doing.’ – RTÉ Junior Book Club Little Island Books

Bumpfizzle the Best on Planet Earth by Patricia Forde, illus. by Elina Braslina

Summary

T H I R D C L A S S

• Chosen as the ‘Dublin UNESCO Citywide Read for 2019’ • Brilliantly funny and accessible read • Playful illustration in the style of Quentin Blake • Theme of older sibling jealousy handled carefully and playfully • Author well-known and shortlisted for Children’s Books Ireland Awards • Illustrator nominated for the Kate Greenaway

Bumpfizzle is an alien, sent to Earth from Planet Plonk on a research mission. Or is he really just a ten-year-old boy who is feeling a bit disgruntled at all the attention his parents are lavishing on The Baby? It is up to readers to make up their own minds. Either way, Bumpfizzle’s confusion at Earthling behaviours, as reported in his diary and his frequent reports back to Plonk, are hilarious, and his adventures are ridiculous, from eating the cat’s food (it makes him throw up, always good for attention) to biting his teacher (to check if humans would make a good source of food for Plonkers) and attempting to sacrifice a goat (he soon discovers what goats’ horns are for).

It was The Baby’s birthday and he was celebrating the number one. He is now one Earth winter old. This must be a very important number because they put it everywhere, even on their food. Not happy with that, they then made a ceremonial fire on top of the cake and sang to the number. Very strange.

Reviews

‘So hilarious! I think Patricia Forde is definitely the high queen of Irish comedy.’ – Eoin Colfer

A fast-paced tale of two children in modern Ireland in a race against time to save their horse

F O U R T H C L A S S

Summary

Author Biography

Ella and Johnny are distraught when Johnny’s horse Storm disappears from his field. Johnny knows that he has been taken by ‘the pound man’. The horse pound’s job is to round up neglected or feral horses and put them down, but Storm doesn’t come into that category. This is plain stealing, and prejudice against his Traveller family.

Paula Leyden won the Éilís Dillon award for her first children’s novel The Butterfly Heart, which is set in Zambia; its sequel, The Sleeping Baobab Tree, won the Children’s Books Ireland Judges Special Award. She lived in Kenya, Zambia and South Africa before moving to Kilkenny, where she now works extensively with the Travelling community and horses.

Ella, Johnny and Ella’s granny aren’t going to let Storm go that easily. They round up the evidence and set off to the pound, where they confront the officials with proof that Storm was not wandering the roads causing mayhem and endangering the traffic, but is a well-cared-for animal who was snatched from a field. The pound officials try to bluff their way out of the situation, but Johnny goes snooping about and discovers where Storm is being kept. Together, the children stage a dramatic rescue.

The Best Medicine by Christine Hamill Highlights A hilarious, brilliantly written take on the unfunny subject of cancer

C L A S S

Philip is twelve years old and life is pretty good. He gets on with his mum and gets by pretty well at school – in spite of girl problems, teacher problems, bully problems and – er – poetry problems. Philip’s happygo-lucky life is disrupted when his mother gets breast cancer. Bad enough that your mother is seriously ill – but could she not have developed a less embarrassing kind of cancer – toe cancer, maybe, or ear cancer? Philip’s attempts to cope with his situation are both hilarious and touching. Things are going wrong for Philip Wright: detentions, broken specs, an English teacher who thinks he’s a poet and a mother who’s started acting weird. She no longer laughs at his jokes, cries a lot and bakes wholemeal buns. And then there’s The Yeti, The Goddess, The Meerkats and Philip’s best friend Ang. Oh, yes, and Mrs Chihuahua next door and her annoying mutt. Not to mention Philip’s hero, a certain TV comedian. A hilarious take on life, love, glasses – and medicine

The Wordsmith by Patricia Forde Reviews ‘The fantasy book of the year.’ – Eoin Colfer, bestselling author of Artemis Fowl

Brilliant speculative fiction about a world where language, music and art are restricted

S I X T H C L A S S

‘A novel that truly stands apart for its originality and relevance… a book about words, about language, about their power to civilise – and, in the wrong hands, to abuse and dehumanise. For a writer to deal with such themes it is the most basic of requirements that she herself should handle words in a manner which exploits their potential richness and resonance. Forde rises magnificently to the challenge’ – The Irish Times

On the death of her master, Letta is suddenly promoted from apprentice to wordsmith, charged with collecting and archiving words in post-apocalyptic, neo-medieval Ark. When she uncovers a sinister plan to suppress language and rob the people of Ark of the power of speech, she realises that she has to save not only words, but the culture itself.

‘The Wordsmith is warm, original, thought-provoking but most of all a tremendous page-turner; I hope this won’t be the last we hear of Letta, a brave and spirited heroine’ – School Library Association

S I X T H C L A S S

• Great adventure story – exotic islands, a hunt for gold, rafts, flying machines, strange fruits and creatures, amazing landscapes • Lots of boy appeal – two boy protagonists, lots of sailing, flying, science and adventure • Plenty of discussion points – great for school as well as leisure reading

Esper and Starn are twin boys who live in a grim world that has been almost laid waste by massive volcanic explosions. Very little grows in Orchard, which used to be a fruit-growing area, but with the death of insects and birds, pollination of the fruit trees is a tedious and precarious undertaking. When the boys discover an intriguing old manuscript in a locked room in their apartment, which tells of gold on one of the forbidden islands the people can see from the coastline, they determine to go on gold-hunt. They manage to construct a glider that takes them far from their home territory, and so begins a whole new adventure for the boys, as they travel from island to island in search of gold. Their adventures are many and they come close to death. They do in the end, find the gold – but it is nothing like what they expected.
